Angry Birds has reached 350 million downloads

Angry Birds has reached 350 million downloads, consumes 300 million minutes of the world's free time each day

Millions this, millions that – the Angry Birds team are probably all patting each other on the back, celebrating passing 350 million downloads. The company’s General Manager Andrew Stalbow bragged about some other numbers – like people spending 300 million minutes each day on the popular bird-flinging game.

But it’s not just about the game anymore – the animated shorts Rovio has put up on YouTube (like this one) have gathered over 170 million views.

Angry Birds already had a tie in with the movie Rio and Stablow hinted at “some interesting entertainment partnerships that will hopefully take what we had from [Angry Birds Rio] to a totally different level.

He also said that Rovio will be focusing on Angry Birds as a franchise for now, but was mum on whether the company will start another franchise or not.

There’s no denying that Angry Birds has been good for them though – the company is reportedly valued around $1.2 billion and has become a phenomenon, leading to things like this or this.

Facebook updates photos with a new mosaic view

Facebook updates photos with a new mosaic view

Facebook has revamped the photos view in your profile, which will now show up as a mosaic of different sized photos that roughly resembles the Metro UI on the Windows 8 homescreen. It also looks very similar to the way Google+ arranges images in its photos view.

The new photos view also puts all your pictures in one location. If you want to highlight certain images, you can click on the image and select the Highlight option, at which point that photo’s thumbnail will appear four times bigger than the others. Of course, you still have the albums as before, now in a separate section.

As is usual for Facebook changes, this new update will roll out gradually to everyone, so if you don’t have it already, you should get it soon.

YouTube looking to offer paid channel subscriptions as early as Q2

YouTube looking to offer paid channel subscriptions as early as Q2

According to several sources, YouTube hopes to begin offering paid subscription channels which will offer premium, produced content.

In an attempt to lure producers away from the traditional television avenues of content delivery, Google is looking to become the first production company for online content capable of reaching such broad audience.

YouTube has allegedly reached out a select group of channel producers inquiring whether they would like to create channels with paid content, the price of which would be between $1 and $5 a month.

There’s also talk of providing paid access to coverage of live events via pay-per-view, or for specific self-help or financial advice programs.

Likely, the initial group of paid channels will be small, with around 25 being submitted for the trial run, the first of which could appear as early as this Spring.

The game has been released for the iOS gadgets since the last December and its price there has been varying between 0.79 and 2.39.

Unfortunately, the Xperia PLAY Android exclusive (for now) costs £5. But the gameplay should be much more interesting using the PLAY’s hardware controls.

Here is the trailer:

In case you own Xperia PLAY and you’re interested buying Battlefield: Bad Company 2, just go to the PLAY’s dedicated game store. It’s still unclear whether this will stay a PLAY exclusive or it will hit the Android Market later.

MeeGo-running Moorestown-based Aava prototype caught in the wild

MeeGo-running Moorestown-based Aava prototype caught in the wild

While we’re still waiting for Nokia to announce its first MeeGo-powered device, the Moorestown-based Aava Mobile smartphone has already started cropping up around the globe. It has just been caught in the wild and a video is about to show up within the next couple of days.

The MeeGo is still in the works and since Nokia N900 won’t be getting it (at least not officially, though) when the new platform is ready to hit the market we’re still yet to meet the first Nokia phone packing the MeeGo.

And while Nokia is taking a nap, the competition isn’t sleeping: the first Aava prototypes (based on the Moorestown platform) have just begun surfacing. Like this one (pictured above), which posed for a quick live shot and is said to appear on a hands-on video over the following 48 hours. So, stay tuned.

8GB Archos 70 starts shipping

8GB Archos 70 starts shipping, the 250GB HDD version is still on stand-by

If you are on the hunt for a 7” Android tablet, you probably considered the Archos 70 at some point. And if you haven’t written it off for one reason or another you now have the chance to give it a hands-on in a store near you.

The ultra-slim Eclair-running tablet (Froyo update should come this month) is available for order through the company’s official US store and you can get it for 279 US dollars. In Europe some online stores have the Archos 70 in stock too, prices being around 215 GBP in the UK or 250 euro in Germany (both equaling about 350 dollars).

For that kind of cash you are getting a 7” WVGA multi-touch capacitive touchscreen, 1GHz Hummingbird CPU, USB host functionality with a standard USB port, HDMI, microSD card slot, a huge number of supported video and audio codecs and a front-facing VGA camera. There’s also a kickstand at the back to make watching those movies all the better.

And if you find the internal storage of 8GB too little, you can wait a little longer for the 250GB HDD version. Have in mind, though that it costs 75 bucks more, is 14mm thick and weighs 400g (compared to 10mm and 300 g on the 8GB version).

Now how about releasing that sweet-looking 10.1” Archos 101, too?

22nm Intel Ivy Bridge processors dated for April 29

22nm Intel Ivy Bridge processors dated for April 29

After numerous delays, Intel’s much-anticipated release of the new high-performance processors has finally been dated.

As an added bonus, the mobile Ivy Bridge processors will be released at the same time as their desktop counterparts. This is good news, as it was initially believed that the mobile versions might be delayed until June the least.

The mobile Core i7 and i7 Extreme lines are expected to meet that same April 29 launch date as the new desktop Core i7′s and i5′s, at prices ranging from $184 for the i5-3450 base model, to a cool $1,096 for the i7-3920XM.

All of the processors announced on the last week of April will be of the quad-core variety, while additional dual-core variants should be available on June 3.

Apparently, Apple’s iPhone 4S marketing blitz, involving Hollywood celebrities has the intended effect. The company just released two new ads starring another movie legend. This time, the person chatting with Siri is no other, but John Malkovich.

The second TV spot, named “Life” shows Siri as a wise and all-knowing counsel, who has the best suggestion as to what we should be doing with it.

Here are the ads themselves.

Google+ SMS now available in 41 additional countries

Google+ SMS now available in 41 additional countries

If you haven’t heard of the Google+ SMS service until now, I wouldn’t blame you. The service isn’t particularly popular (neither is Google+, for that matter) and was only available in the US and India until now.

Google has now expanded the list of countries where the service is now functional and it includes the following places: Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Bahrain, Benin, Cambodia, Cameroon, Congo (DRC), Cote D’Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea, Indonesia, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia.

So what exactly do you do with this service? It’s simple. Instead of posting messages on Google+ using the website or their dedicated app, you can post using SMS. The SMS is sent to a particular number and then the message gets posted on your Google+ profile. If people reply to it, you get the replies and notifications on your phone as an SMS. This is great for those who don’t have a smartphone or a smartphone that does not have a Google+ app, yet. It would also spare you some megabytes off the phone bill for mobile data.

Each Google I/O attendee gets free Nexus 7

Each Google I/O attendee gets free Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus and Nexus Q

One of the first people to get the Google Nexus 7 tablet are the developers and attendees at the Google I/O conference, which is currently taking place in San Francisco.

It’s a sweet déjà vu from a year before, when Google gave away free 32GB Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Samsung Nexus S and Samsung Chromebook to each attending developer. Now the company is doing it again, but this time with its own, freshly announced Nexus 7 tablet, a brand new Galaxy Nexus and the innovative Nexus Q.

All 6000 developers and attendees will receive the aforementioned gadgets. This is the Google way of showing their gratitude to the hard-working Android developers.

What’s even better is that some of the gifted Nexus Q and Nexus 7 units will inevitably find their way to eBay in the next few days, so you might get a chance to get them before the public launch.

iPhone 4 running iOS 5

iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1 gets untethered jailbreak

Good news for iPhone 4 users who were either running an older version of iOS for the jailbreak or running iOS 5.1 but were waiting for a proper untethered jailbreak.

iOS security researcher pod2g tweeted today that his iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1 is now running untethered. As of now, though, he may be the only one with the recipe to do this although we expect a redsn0w update to come out soon which will make it available for the masses.

As of now, it can only do a tethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4, meaning you will have to keep your phone switched on or you will lose it and have to do it all over again. Hopefully, the updated version is released soon.

LG Optimus LTE SU6200 comes to spread its AH-IPS magic around our office

LG Optimus LTE SU6200 comes to spread its AH-IPS magic around our office, we unbox it on video [VIDEO]

Yet another high-end phone appeared at our doorstep today. The LG Optimus LTE SU6200 is the pioneer of the company’s brand new AH-IPS display, which aims to challenge the best on the market.

As usual on such occasions we thought you might be interested in seeing a quick hands-on video garnished with our first impressions of the smartphone.

The LG Optimus LTE’s HD AH-IPS screen is downright impressive, easily ranking among the best LCD units on the market. With a pixel density of 326 ppi, you won’t be able to spot individual pixels no matter how hard you try or how closely you look.

LG Optimus LTE SU6200LG Optimus LTE SU6200LG Optimus LTE SU6200LG Optimus LTE SU6200
LG Optimus LTE SU6200 live shots

And granted it cannot match the AMOLEDs for contrast, but it is certainly doing well in its own field. Viewing angles are splendid as well, giving the icons-painted-on-top-of-the-glass look that we love so much.

Sadly, the high resolution also seems to have a bit of a negative impact on the performance and the LG Optimus LTE isn’t as smooth as the other smartphones with a similar chipset. Then again, it might all turn out to be a matter of optimization and things might look better with an upcoming update. The Adreno 220 is not the most powerful GPU around, but it should certainly be able to handle the UI better.

Cutting to the chase, here’s the LG Optimus LTE unboxing and hands-on video.

Don’t worry, the signal strength is fine – the antenna that you saw is used for T-DMB wireless broadcast, as what you see here is a Korea-only model. That’s why we are not going to do a full review of the LG Optimus LTE – this one is not supposed to be used anywhere else.

We are going to use it for a display shootout with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, though, and see if the AH-IPS screen is all that LG makes it to be. If you are still interested in finding more about the Optimus LTE, you can check out our LG Nitro HD review, as that is simply the AT&T version of the same smartphone.

Sony promises Ice Cream Sandwich update to Tablet S

Sony promises Ice Cream Sandwich update to Tablet S, fails to mention a release date

Sony may not have had a lot of success in the tablet market but it is not going to abandon those who decided to spend their money on their Tablet S. And so to show that it will continue to support the device, Sony has just announced its intention to upgrade the tablet to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Unfortunately, Sony failed to mention any release date for the update, instead requesting its users to stay tuned. They did not say anything about the Tablet P either, which also runs Android Honeycomb at the moment.

It’s good to see that some manufacturers are still committed to their products and customers. If you want a different looking tablet from the ones that are available at the moment you may want to give the Sony Tablet S a try, now that you know that it will be updated to ICS soon. The 16GB version costs $449.99 and the 32GB model costs 549.99.

Samsung purportedly working on a 16MP Galaxy S4 Zoom cameraphone

Samsung purportedly working on a 16MP Galaxy S4 Zoom cameraphone

The latest rumor suggests Samsung has a new camera-centric smartphone in the works – the Galaxy S4 Zoom, which will feature a 16MP camera sensor.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom will be less powerful than the Galaxy S4 flagship. It will pack a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED screen and run on a dual or a quad-core processor.

The rest of the rumored specs include 8GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n and GPS receiver. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom should run on Android Jelly Bean skinned with Samsung’s own TouchWiz UI.

As the rumor has it we can expect the Galaxy S4 Zoom to launch in June or July with SM-C1010 model number.

That’s all we know so far. If Samsung is indeed preparing such a smartphone we guess other leaks will follow soon.

Google releases YouTube Capture app for the iPhone and iPod touch

Google releases YouTube Capture app for the iPhone and iPod touch

After being dropped out of iOS 6 by Apple, the YouTube app became a standalone application that had to be downloaded from the App Store. But one of the biggest shortcomings of this app was that it was meant only for content consumption, and there was no way to upload videos from it.

Google has now released a separate application for the iPhone and iPod touch, whose only purpose is recording videos and uploading them on YouTube. You can shoot and do quick editing to your videos from within the app itself or upload one of your existing videos.

Unfortunately, the app is currently not available for the iPad. To check it out in action on an iPhone, watch the video below.

GSMArena

GSMArena.com loads faster now, thanks to our new deal with MaxCDN

At GSMArena.com we’re always looking for a way to improve the browsing experience for our users. The latest change is behind the scenes, so you’re not going to see it, but you’ll feel it – we’ve started using a CDN, which tangibly reduces page load times.

The Content Delivery Network or CDN, as it’s more commonly known, is a network of servers around the world, which serve static data (images, CSS, static html and scripts) to your browser and is a great way to improve page load times for websites with visitors from all over the world.

This way, regardless of where you are in the world in relation to our central hosting servers, your browser will always fetch the web pages and images from a CDN server that’s close to you, speeding up page load times as data doesn’t have to traverse half a world of Internet infrastructure any more.

This change should have the biggest impact on page load times for our readers in Europe, but readers in Asia, Australia and Africa should also feel a bump up in speed when browsing GSMArena.com. Load times should improve for our US-based readers too, but since the site loaded pretty fast from there already, you might need a stopwatch to notice the difference.

Thanks to MaxCDN, who made us an offer we could not refuse.

Motorola Droid Froyo update starts making its way OTA

Motorola Droid Froyo update starts making its way OTA

Rejoice Droid users! Even though Motorola already released its successor, the Americans haven’t forgotten about the original Droid. It’s getting a fresh new software update as we speak, bringing all the goodness of Froyo 2.2 to the QWERTY-packing slider.

With Froyo becoming available as an OTA update to Droids as well, the share of the latest version of the OS should receive another boost and start closing the gap to Eclair. At the moment only 4.5 percent of all androids have been blessed with Froyo, while Eclair accounts for nearly 60 percent of all devices.

Here’s hoping that the Droid GSM-loving cousin will get the same treatment in the near future.

Apple sold 3 million iPads (big and small) in opening weekend

Apple sold 3 million iPads (big and small) in opening weekend

Apple managed to sell a million iPads a day since the iPad 4th generation and iPad mini hit their first wave of stores just three days ago.

Apple didn’t specify how many iPad mini’s and iPad 4′s were sold but the total number is still worth mentioning.

The 3 million are all Wi-Fi only models and Apple expects the Wi-Fi + Cellular options of both tablets to ship in a few weeks in the US with more countries to be added later this year.

According to Brian White, a Topeka Capital Markets analyst, the iPad mini was sold out at around 60% of surveyed Apple retail stores in the US.

The 3rd generation iPad set record sales in its first weekend back in March by selling 3 million units. Releasing a new iPad as soon as Apple did doesn’t seem to have slowed the pace at which their tablets sell, even if we’re talking about two separate devices this time around.
